After years of watching Samsung, Google, Motorola, and others do the folding-phone thing, Apple finally showed up with one of its own.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display. Open it and the phone becomes a 7.6-inch device with Apple’s largest iPhone display yet. Apple says both screens use the same aspect ratio so apps and content scale naturally as you move between them.
The fold is not the whole story
Apple is clearly trying to make the hardware trick fade into the background. The inner display gets a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare and make the crease less obvious. The hinge is designed to feel smooth in use, and Apple says the closed phone provides roughly 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro while staying compact.
That is a more interesting pitch than “look, our phone bends.” Foldables become genuinely useful when the larger display makes normal tasks better—reading, maps, multitasking, games, documents, and video—without making the closed phone annoying to carry.
It is unmistakably a premium experiment
The starting price is $1,999. Inside is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, a dual-battery architecture, and a custom vapor chamber for thermal management. Apple says the inner screen is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display, and the Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year.
The camera gets some genuinely foldable tricks
The shape creates a few practical camera uses. You can preview a shot on the outer display while using the rear cameras, prop the phone up for hands-free calls or recording, and show another person the framing while you shoot. Those are small things, but they are the kind of small things that can make a new form factor feel less like a stunt.
When can you actually get one?
Apple says preorders begin October 16, with availability starting October 23. Storage options run from 256GB through 2TB, and the phone comes in star white and night sky.
The bigger question is whether a $1,999 foldable becomes a normal iPhone category or remains the expensive one for people who really want the biggest screen Apple can fit in a pocket. Either way, Apple has officially entered the foldable era.
